About the activity
Wadi Rum is situated in southern Jordan, about a 1,5 hour drive from Aquaba. Wadi Rum offers a magnificent desert landscape, 500-meter-high red sandstone walls, ragged cliffs and the fascinating culture of the Bedouin people. It is one of the world most famous adventure climbing destination and an UNESO world heritage site!
The mid - to late- autumn months are the best time to visit the area, there is hardly precipitation to be expected and temperatures range around 25 degrees Celsius during the day and 5 degrees at night.
Day1: Meeting point at airport Queen Alia near Amman, just before the passport controlling point. Our agent will carry a sign. In the airport you have an opportunity to withdraw local currency or change money at one of the money changers. Next comes a 3-hour drive to the Wadi, in which, after entering the nature reserve, you will change to off-road vehicles and drive to the desert camp. After dinner and a short briefing, we will walk outside together to enjoy the starry skies. Most overnights will be spent in a Bedouin Desert Camp. You can expect single/double rooms created out of Bedouin tents that offer real beds, shared showers and washrooms as well as excellent local food. It is situated in a beautiful spot in the middle of the desert.
Day2: A short off-road drive to the entrance to the Rakabt Canyon. Surrounded by 400m high sandstone walls and the finest desert scenery one can imagine, we will undertake a challenging round trip with 2 rappels and an easy scrambling (UIAA II). Through the mountains labyrinth we will find our way back to the camp and to one of the area’s most beautiful sand dunes. (6 hours trip, with some scrambling UIAA II/III and two rappels).
Day 3: A Jeep will take us to the area of the Burda Bridge. Easy climbing (UIAA II) and some hiking will take us to the spectacular natural arch. After a lunch break, we will drive to the world famous Barrah Canyon take a challenging walk through the heart of the mountain and to the white sands awaiting us on the other side. Our local partners will provide us with matrasses, food and delicious hot Bedouin tee and we will enjoy the campfire and sleep under the magnificent desert sky.
Day 4: After exploring our surrounding by daylight- We will head back to the desert camp where we will prepare ourselves for the coming day and the ascent of Jabel Rum. Today, the afternoon can be designed according to your wishes - you can spend the time relaxing in the beautiful atmosphere of the desert camp, go climbing a multi pitch with the guide, walk for an hour to watch the famous rock paintings of Mount. ChazAli or take a taxi to visit the red sea town of Aqaba.
Day 5: We will hike and climb up Jabel Rum (1734m), the highest peak of the area. The Bedouin route we will follow (UIAA III) offers beautiful climbing and a breathtaking scenery. We will bivy on the summit plateau of Jabel Rum. Having to carry a 8kg backpack, an estimated hiking/climbing time of approximately 6 hours and climbing up to UIAA Grade III define the character of this big day on the mountain.
Day 6: We descend from Jabel Rum by rappelling 12 times and hiking a fair bit. Back in the village we will recover from our big route by drinking nice tea and coffee. The overnight will be spending back in the comfortable Desert Camp.
Day 7: End of activity after breakfast.
