About the activity
About 1,5-hour drive from Aquaba (Jordan), lies one of the world’s most beautiful deserts, Wadi Rum (The Rum valley). The combination between sand dunes, sheer rock walls, mountains and water can be found only there. Add to it the fascinating culture of the Bedouin people and this trip to the UNESO world heritage site will be an unforgettable experience!
The autumn months are the best time to visit the area as there is hardly any precipitation to be expected and temperatures comfortable during the day yet can be cool at night.
Day1: Meeting point at airport Queen Alia near Amman, just before the passport controlling point. Our agent will carry a sign with “Mountains” logo. In the airport you have an opportunity to withdraw local currency or change money. Next comes a 3-hour drive to the Wadi (Arabic for "valley"), in which, after entering the nature reserve, you will change to off-road vehicles and drive to the desert camp. After dinner and a short briefing, we will walk outside together to enjoy the starry skies. Most overnights will be spent in a Bedouin Desert Camp. You can expect single/double rooms created out of Bedouin tents that offer real beds, shared showers and washrooms as well as excellent local food. It is situated in a beautiful spot in the middle of the desert.
Day 2: An off-road vehicle will take us to the area of the Burda Bridge. Easy climbing (UIAA II) and some hiking will take us to the spectacular natural arch and the UNESCO world heritage site. After the visit we will enjoy a picnic and a trip to a view point of the “white desert” where we will enjoy a sweet Bedouin tee white waiting for the sunset.
Day 3: A short off-road drive to the entrance to the Rakabt Canyon. Surrounded by 400m high sandstone walls and the finest desert scenery one can imagine, we will undertake a challenging round trip with 2 rappels and an easy scrambling (UIAA II). Through the mountains labyrinth we will find our way back to the camp and to one of the area’s most beautiful sand dunes. (6 hours trip, with some scrambling UIAA II/III and two rappels).
Day 4: In the morning, we will travel together (on camel’s backs) to the great “Siq” (Canyon) of Jabel Chaz-Ali to enjoy the ancient wall paintings, after a picnic, via 4X4 vehicle we will drive together to the Barrah canyon and cross a magnificent labyrinth to reach the other side and the white sands of the “Rad el Beida” (The white space). Detached from the civilization we will spend the night unde3r the starry sky. In the morning, after a Bedouin breakfast of flat bread, salad and fetta cheese, we will have some time to explore the area before heading back to the desert camp. The afternoon is free and we are happy to arrange for you a trip to Aqaba or any other individual adventure accessible from the camp.
Day 5: A climb to the summit of Um Ad ‘Dami- at 1854 meter the highest summit in Jordan- on the border between Saudi Arabia and Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan this is a land-mark with breathtaking desert views all the way to the Red Sea.
Day 6: Today we tour all the springs around the village of Wadi Rum- from Laurence well to the water dripping springs of the Makman canyon. In the evening we will share together our last meal and enjoy a relaxing eveing*.
Day 7: End of activity after breakfast.
